By Michelle T. Hallman / Associated Press The story of how a New York City nail plant was planted and the lessons it has learned in the years since.
In late 2015, a local nail artist called David Daugherty was doing nails in his studio, working from his home on a quiet block in the Bronx.
The artist, a lifelong nail enthusiast who says he has worked in nail art for 20 years, was a bit of a latecomer to nail art.
But he was keen to take a chance.
“I just thought it would be interesting to take this a step further and try something different,” he said.
Daugherty started working with his nail artist friend, John Cone, who has been doing nail art since he was a kid.
He had heard about the trend for plants to be covered in gold paint and knew he had to try it.
“He’s an amazing nail artist, and I’ve known him for 15 years,” Daughers said.
“We thought it’d be a great idea to do something different.”
Cone’s plan was to cover the nail art in a gold paint-filled paint pot, and use the silver paint to fill the pot.
The plan didn’t take long to get started.
They had a plan, and a plan was born.
It wasn’t until April that the nail artist and his friend began work on the nail painting.
The process took about a month, and by the time it was done, the paint was so gold that Daugries hand was so covered in it that it would have looked like he had been painting gold nails.
By then, the couple was so used to the gold that they didn’t notice anything was different.
They were just working on a project.
“It’s just a very organic process,” Cone said.
But the paint still wasn’t covering everything, so they decided to make it a little bit more organic.
Daugys assistant, Lauren, was also doing nails at the time, and Daugieres wife, Jessica, helped out.
The nail art became a hit.
People started calling her.
And then, people started calling Daugrey.
“People were saying that this is like, my favorite nail art,” he recalled.
Dugan, the artist, saw it as an opportunity to experiment.
He started making nail art himself, and has since created hundreds of different plant designs.
“A lot of people were asking me if I could make more, but I really had to be like, no, this is the first time I’ve ever done something like this,” Dugan said.
By the time the two men were finished, they had a successful design.
But that wasn’t the end of their experiment.
“One of the first things I realized was that I wanted to be able to do things that I’ve never done before,” Dugans assistant, Danielle, said.
And so, in early 2017, Dugan and Cone made their first batch of plants.
The two are still using plants in their studio, but are now working to produce their own gold-painted nails, which they hope will be available for sale on Etsy and other online retailers.
“There are lots of people out there doing nail artists nails and gold paint,” Coney said.
“It’s been a great learning experience.”
